With its unique concept, unparalleled line-ups and untraditional use of space, RAW has since 2004 developed into Scandinavia’s biggest event of its kind.
Each year, Copenhagen’s Most Wanted, OHOI! and Urbanical – the innovative crews behind RAW – have delivered the total clubbing experience: music genres and crowds that are traditionally separated in the narrow confines of sub-cultural venues are united for one night, from sunset till dawn and beyond, united in a sense of collective musical experience. From clubs to discos, from downtown to uptown, they join together in the party that encompass everything.
For five years in a row, RAW has thus been the one night in the year that B-boys, rave kids, fashion junkies, pop chicks and bass fanatics all look forward to: it is the only event where you can experience genres as different as Dancehall and House, Baile Funk and Techno, Dubstep and RnB, Rock and Electro. The music is performed by the best DJs and live acts, hand-picked from all over the world. That is why, at RAW, one is always guaranteed a carefully planned and executed tour de force in music of the highest standard, from the underground to the mainstream: a true celebration of clubbing culture in all its colours and shapes.
Through the years, RAW has placed Copenhagen centrally on the global map of club culture. The original location was a huge silo in Copenhagen harbour, where the event grew year by year, from 2,500 guests in 2004 to 4,000 in 2007. After a last giant party, RAW began a new chapter in 2008 at another harbour location, Halvandet. Here, under the blue sky and next to the rocking waves, all records for a club event in Denmark was beaten when we hosted 5,500 ravers, seven scenes with music and over 50 artists in 2008.
Through the years, we’ve been visited by close to 20,000 guests and 200 artists from all over the world. Huge international artists such as Neneh Cherry, D Ramirez, Buraka Som Sistema, Ronni Herel, ATFC, Chase & Status, Donnacha Costello, Robbo Ranx, P Toile, and Martijn Ten Velden have all visited RAW. All the biggest and best from the Danish scene, including LOC, Rune RK, Djuna Barnes, Jean von Baden, Johnson, Thomas Madvig and Kjeld Tolstrup, have represented at RAW; and, in line with our philosophy, we have always supported up-and-coming local talent such as Mike Sheridan, Fagget Fairys and When Saints Go Machine.
We’ve been honoured to work with major international concepts such as BBC and Ministry of Sound; and with well-established local party moguls such as Rub’A’Dub, MidWeekBrakes and Okyo. We have broadcasted live on global radio in cooperation with BBC 1 Xtra and we’ve received coverage in practically every major Danish media outlets from Politiken over TV2 News to AOK and Urban. There’s even a documentary film about RAW 2004!
RAW has been celebrated and recognized by its peers: we have won numerous awards including ‘Event of the year’ at Danish DeeJay Awards 2006, 2007 and 2008; ‘Event of the year’ 2006 and ‘Mega-Event of the Year’ 2007 at Danish Club Awards; and we’ve been nominated ‘Best Music Event in Copenhagen’ 2007 and ‘Best Surprise of the Year’ 2008 at AOK’s ‘Best of the City’ awards.
Thus, we have achieved that crossover between mainstream and underground that we originally aimed at. RAW has become a central institution on the Scandinavian scene and has proved itself as the ultimate clubbing experience. In 2008, we broke all records for clubbing in Scandinavia, and in the future, we will expand both the event itself and our concept. We will continue as the flag ship for Danish clubbing culture as we start to comb the international scene for the best talent to feature future events. So, look out for RAW 2009, which will be bigger and better in all ways thinkable – and look out for RAW merchandise, a new RAW website and other stuff coming up.
Keep it RAW!
Love,
The RAW team:
